My First Overcooked Thought

June 28, 2009

Realizing my world is different

The Southeastern region of the United States is its own little world, I've come to realize. Having lived in the south from birth, and in Florida for the majority of my life, I had never made a distinction between life here and anywhere else. After all, I don't know any other way of life.

Only through conversations with a friend who lives in Michigan have I made a realization as to how vastly different life in the south is from other places.

It's like we're on another planet. From foods to weather, seasons to critters, it's very different than other places in the United States. I'm not saying that we're not normal. (Quite frankly, the rest of ya'll seem a little weird to me, but that's probably another blog concept entirely.)

Down here we know how to overdo everything

So why do I call my thoughts "overcooked"? I live in the Deep South. True southern things are often overdone. Veggies are overcooked; the heat index in the spring is in the triple digits; attractions are over-priced; and our brains are sun-fried to the point at which they, like our vegetables, are overcooked. (This explains Florida drivers, by the way.)

And so this blog will be hodgepodge of my thoughts about living in Florida and the Deep South. I may comment on the weather, an attraction, the people or something we learned as homeschoolers in Florida.

These are just notes and photos from my little planet, Florida.
